Congrats to both families! Erin and Riley are alumnae of the youth program, and rising stars on the national team and professional cycling world. https://cyclingcanada.ca/sport/general/news/canadas-santiago-2023-cycling-team-announced/(https://cyclingcanada.ca/sport/general/news/canadas-santiago-2023-cycling-team-announced/)

I'm considering using a smart trainer to do periodic testing for interested riders in the youth program. Ideally something for a short sprint 5-6 sec, a longer sprint (30 s), aerobic power (3-4 min), and threshold power (20 min). Looks like wahoo has a test called the Full Frontal (who dreams up these names anyway?). Anyone tried this? Especially ways to make the test reproducible approx every 4 months, and other factors to make it reasonably accurate for motivating and defining training.

I’m just getting caught up on race results after being away, but Riley has been anything but. He’s racing the Tour de Bretagne in the north of France. He was third on the first stage in a bunch sprint, and second in the second stage in a similar finish. Riley is in the white helmet.

Bronze is Canada’s best result at a home Nations Cup, one of the qualifying meets for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. And Tripleshot members and youth program alumnae Sarah Van Dam and Erin Attwell were 50% of the Canadian team, along with Maggie Coles-Lyster, and Arianne Bonhomme. https://cyclingcanada.ca/sport/track-2/news/canada-nabs-first-medals-of-the-2023-tissot-uci-track-nations-cup-milton/
Bravo Sarah and Erin on the podium at Nations Cup Milton content media

Just wanted to say thanks to Joji and the Tripleshot members who organized, registered, marshalled, rode and helped coach. That was a great circuit, great surface, four different kinds of corners, pleasant surroundings, quiet traffic and a hill just big enough to be a possible factor (vs the main determinant like Mt Newton. Tripleshot youth riders Kai 14 and Mateus 15 stepped up to ride B with nationals rider Amos 15. Kai lasted 8 laps with B’s, after winning C last weekend. Mateus was active until cramping set him back. He’s frustrated, but needs reminding he’s coming back from serious illness. Amos broke a gear cable with 3 to go, but held on for 5th. In C, Tendo 15 had the perfect experience; made about 5 laps with the front group, got gapped on the hill, joined up with another dropped rider to chase, but couldn’t quite hold him, then saw him catch the front group, and is determined she will do that next time. Xavier 13 tried c, lasted a while before getting gapped, got picked up by the novice group, then jumped onto another chasing c rider and held him until the finish. First race, first breakaway! Matthew 11 was apparently so intimidating, the other novices didn’t show, so a bunch of great folks jumped in to give him a pack to practice corners with. Multi-national track champion Kimberly Chen rolled through the paceline smoothly and offered tips, then Chad joined and we had a peloton. Matthew even stretched our legs on the climb a couple laps. I’m hoping someone get a photo of his victory salute. :)
Thanks Tripleshot for the Very Cool Race Sunday! content media

Four Tripleshot youth riders start racing today at the u17,u19 national track championships in Bromont, Quebec. The championships are also the selection event for the junior world championships. The riders are Kimberly Chen, 7x medalist at 2022 nationals in her first year u19, and eligible for junior worlds. Kimberly is beginning to specialize in sprint events. Oscar Wong is in his second year u17, and expected to do well, especially in the sprint events. He won three medals in 2022, including a surprise bronze in 500 m. Isla Rendle is also in her second nationals, and was part of three team medals for BC in 2022. Amos Scott-Bouris, 15, is a first year u17, and probably the most affected by the closure of Burnaby velodrome this winter (it’s reopening soon). But in training this week he’s looked fast and comfortable on the Bromont track. The BC team is 10 riders. Lister is assistant coach in the hybrid Team BC/club project, lead by provincial coach Tom Sherstobitoff. Bromont opened in September, replacing an outdoor velodrome purchased from the Atlanta Olympics. The frame however was reused, with a new surface of laminated birch on edge, a new surface championed by Ontario track builder Peter Junek. The riders reported it smoother than Milton, no flex, but with nice sideways grip from the laminations, meaning the steeper bankings feel secure. The building is even more remarkable, sunny, open, with a welcoming access area, and with interesting new features like an indoor pump track, pickle ball courts, strength gym, offices, bike rentals, cafe, and seating for ~300. Approx. 1/3 the cost of Milton. It’s what we’d want here. The staff have been super welcoming, and patiently braving my French. Wish them well!
